I spent last weekend at a private viewing of a small collection of pre-1980s sports cars, and I couldn't stop thinking about how similar the buying process is to the way we position a business. The owner didn't talk about horsepower first. He talked about the first owner, the factory that built it, the exact shade of blue that was only offered for two years. He talked about the mechanic who had cared for it for a decade. Only after that did he mention the engine. That's not nostalgia. That's a value system. And it maps directly to how we should communicate about what we do. In my work with portfolio updates and service positioning, I see the same mistake over and over: we lead with the feature list. We say what we do, how fast we do it, what tools we use. That's the equivalent of quoting a 0-60 time. It's impressive for a moment, but it doesn't tell anyone why they should care. The collector understood something that most businesses don't: performance is emotional before it is technical. The engine matters, but only because of the story it enables. The same is true for a service. The process matters, but what people remember is how it made them feel—confident, understood, secure. So when I sit down with a client to rethink their portfolio or their service narrative, I ask different questions. Not "what do you offer" but "what do you want your client to feel when they leave a meeting with you?" Not "what are your credentials" but "what moment made you decide to do this work?" The answers are rarely about numbers. They're about identity. About the pride of craft. About the quiet confidence that comes from knowing you've done this before, and you'll do it again. That's what separates a commodity from a collection. And that's what separates a service that is easily replaced from one that people seek out by name. If you're in Graz and you've been thinking about how to reposition your offer, I'd love to talk. Not about templates or trends—but about the story only you can tell. Because in the end, we're all collectors of something. The question is whether we know why.
